South of Cuernavaca are the ruins of Xochicalco. The city was inhabited successively by people of the Toltec, Olmec, Zapotec, Mixtec, and Aztec civilizations, starting in 650 AD. Most of the visitors to the ruins are Mexican citizens. They take much pride in their heritage.
